The Help Kids Talk in Lisburn & Colin won the Advancing Healthcare Awards 2018 for the PHA building capacity in communities and in prevention. Lorraine Coulter, Lead specialist for Speech & Language SEHSCT and Mabel Scullion, Early Intervention Lisburn Manager picked up the award on behalf of the project team on the 7th November 2018 in the La Mon Hotel.
Help Kids Talk is an ambitious initiative which is leading the way in Northern Ireland in prioritising speech, language and communication. Over a ¼ of primary 1 pupils in Lisburn & Colin are starting school with a mild to severe speech & language problem. Research shows that if this problem is not resolved early it impacts on children’s communication skills, education, social skills, emotional development and life chances. We want the best for all our children and young people and we want to create a buzz around communication to get everyone involved. Basic awareness training has been designed for anyone who has anything to do with children, parents, carers, grandparents, childminders, church and community leaders to name but a few.
Mr Adrian Bird, Director of the Resurgam Trust said ‘The Resurgam Trust is delighted to be a lead partner in this dynamic initiative. The commitment from all 26 partners has been astounding but it highlights that together we can achieve more and no one organisation alone can change these statistics, it requires a collective approach from everyone who has anything to do with children. ‘As a group we are determined to get the best for every child’.
